- THE BENTLEY R-TYPE
Rolls-Royce's rationalization policy continued after WWII with the introduction in 1946 of standard bodywork on the MkVI Bentley, Rolls-Royce's first post-war product. A separate chassis was retained, featuring a new design of independent front suspension, hydraulic front brakes, and a new 4,257cc, six-cylinder power unit. The latter was enlarged to 4,566cc in 1951, while a much-needed improvement to the standard bodywork arrived mid-way through 1952 in the shape of an enlarged boot together with associated alterations to the rear wings and suspension, subsequent models incorporating these changes being known as the R-Type Bentley (and E-Series Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn).
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED Chassis number B104LWH was manufactured in early 1954 and has the four-speed automatic transmission that had recently become available as an option (and would be standardized on the successor 'S' Series). A left-drive model built for export, it was ordered new in Belgium and originally trimmed in Black Masons with a single light blue coachline over blue hides with blue pipping. Leave it to the hip and modern Flanders to order such a novel colorway. Remaining in Brussels for the first five years of its life, in late May of 1959 the Rolls is recorded as having been exported to New York City in the care of Mr. Jack Stack.
On US soil the car was likely subject to a repaint and retrim within the first decade or so in the country. Finished in a more common combination of bronze over beige with red coachlines and tan hides, it appears to have spent the majority of its life in the care of a single family before being acquired by the current owner about a decade ago. On static display since acquisition, mechanical recommissioning is recommended before active use. Ready for gentle refurbishing or restoration, this Bentley with the rare and desirable automatic transmission is not one to miss.
