W.O. Bentley’s original pledge to his customers promised an automobile of “great comfort and unquestioned luxury” while packing “the thinly veiled ability to turn into something special at any moment.” Those qualities have shone through Bentley’s offerings for decades and have come to their fullest realization in the Continental GTC Speed, a convertible version of which is offered here with just 10,815 miles. Introduced into the Continental model range first as a coupe in 2008 and then in convertible form in 2010, the Speed has stood at the top of the Continental pecking order through two generations, elevated by improvements in every facet of performance.
For 2015, ride height was shaved by .4 inches, front camber was increased by 15% and the ServoTronic steering system tightened to improve steering response. The air suspension was recalibrated and front and rear springs, rear anti-roll bar and bushings were all stiffened. In addition, the 6.0L, twin-turbocharged W-12 engine—which requires 12.5 hours to assemble by hand—packs the most punch ever, driving 626 HP and 607 lb-ft of torque to Pirelli P-Zero tires on 21-inch alloy wheels via a specially calibrated, paddle-shifted ZF 8-speed automatic transmission.
Bentley’s engine management system coordinates distribution of power through the Torsen rear differential, dividing it 40/60 front and rear under normal driving, with maximum rearward transfer set at 85% under full acceleration. Large vented disc brakes capably handle the task of bringing the GTC Speed’s heft to a halt. The Speed’s performance is unexpected by those who first experience it, but its reputation for regal styling and luxury accommodations always precedes it. This splendid 2015 example’s white paint shimmers in light, beckoning onlookers to the confines of one of the most finely wrought interiors in any vehicle.
In this case, two-tone Linen Connolly leather is hand-stitched with contrasting threads, including the three-spoke steering wheel and diamond-stitched seating surfaces. Drilled alloy pedals, remote control mirrors, ventilated massaging seats and a six-disc CD changer add to the Speed’s already exclusive ambience, which is best enjoyed with the top down and the sun-drenched horizon ahead.
