With the mid-size 100 and 200 proving successful, Audi set about adapting the platform to create a full-size luxury saloon. Launched in 1988, the Audi V8 was built on a lengthened version of the 100's chassis, with new front and rear ends and the brand's first use of a V8 engine. Coupled with Quattro all-wheel-drive, the 32-valve, overhead camshaft, all-aluminium V8 was available in 3.6-litre or 4.2-litre capacities, with the latter making 276 bhp at a heady 5,800rpm. The platform would find unlikely success on the track, with a Group A specification V8 claiming back-to-back DTM titles in 1990-91.
A long wheelbase version was assembled by Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Graz, Austria, with the model lasting until the high-tech all-aluminium A8 arrived for 1993. This Audi V8 L Quattro ordered new in 1992 through VAG Auto Thomas in Bonn for 171,674 DM. Painted in Titan Metallic assorted with Platinum leather, the car was equipped new with numerous luxury equipment such as Bose speakers, front and rear heated seats, automatic Webasto air conditioning... After 98,124 km covered in about three years, Auto Thomas bought back the car in 1995, did a complete service and sold the car to the current owner in 1996, the Audi was then showing 110,930 km on the odometer.
Barely driven since, the car is now showing 112,675 km and after being on static display in the owner's private collection, would require recommissioning and detailing prior to be driven. This V8 L Quattro will be sold with its Fahrzeugbrief; Abmeldebescheinigung für den Fahrzeughalter, different TÜV documents; its original purchase invoices from 1992 and 1996.
