Dramatic looks, blistering performance and superbly engineered, this Audi-maintained, manual gearbox, 4.2 V8 FSI has covered a shade under 8,000 miles from new. Genuine mid-engined exotics don't tend to wear German badges. Yes, there have been a few such anomalies down the years, but they rarely received the acclaim of their Italian counterparts. Here's the car that broke the mould, the Audi R8. Here was proof that you could buy a car with the charisma and presence of a Lamborghini and the engineering of, well, an Audi - and with the performance to match.
The Audi R8, based on the Audi Le Mans Quattro concept car (designed by Frank Lamberty and Julian Hoenig), first appeared at the 2003 International Geneva Motor Show. The R8 road car was officially launched at the Paris Auto Show on 30th September 2006 to huge acclaim. Initial models included the R8 4.2 FSI Coupé (with a V8 engine) and R8 5.2 FSI Coupé (with a V10 engine) and most opted for the 6-speed manual transmission. Based on its cousin, the Lamborghini Gallardo, the R8's styling tempted many away from the rather staid Porsche 911 and was competitively priced in comparison to its more flamboyant mid-engined rivals.
This superb example was first registered on 1st September 2009 and finished in arguably the best colour combination of Ice Silver over a black leather interior. The design remains cutting-edge and the interior is well appointed, with high quality fixtures and precision engineered metalwork complemented by carbon fibre trim. Maintained by Audi main agents from new, the car was last serviced 548 miles ago and the odometer reading, at the time of cataloguing, was 7,496 miles. It's presented to auction with its service book, handbooks, Audi maintenance invoices and an advisory-free MOT Certificate valid until April 2025.
