- THE ASTON MARTIN DBS
Introduced in 1967, the new DBS was the successor to the DB6 – it represented a new, very modern look for Aston Martin. Styled in-house by William 'Bill' Towns, the beautiful DBS caused quite a stir, Autocar magazine observing that: "Without the aid of an Italian stylist the Newport Pagnell team came up with something as modern, handsome and Italianate as anything from the Turin coachbuilders at that time." The DBS was wider and had a lower profile than its predecessor, giving a more aggressive look and offering more cabin space. The engine was placed further back in the chassis, behind the front axle, resulting in an almost 50/50 weight ratio.
Using a de Dion rear axle, the DBS exhibited excellent handling characteristics. The interior was as usual luxuriously appointed with the finest Connolly hides available in best Aston Martin fashion. James Bond approved as well, using a DBS as his motorcar of choice in the 1969 film On Her Majesty's Secret Service, and again in the next Bond film Diamonds are Forever where a DBS sits in Q's famous workshop getting prepared for action. A superb expression of automotive design, the Aston Martin DBS has become an icon of the marque, and also marks the last model produced under Sir David Brown's leadership at Aston Martin.
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED This DBS was ordered new as dealer stock by Edmonton, Canada Aston agent International Automotive Rebuilders, LTD in the summer of 1970. While not acquired for a specific buyer, it built to U.S. spec and was generously optioned with air conditioning, dual front headrests, rear lap belts, Bosch New Yorker radio with four door speakers, Fiam horns, and the ZF 5-speed manual. Finished in Silver Birch over Dark Blue Connolly hides, the DBS was completed on November 24, 1970. It appears the that '5649' would spend virtually its entire life in Canada. Original receipts on file dating back to December of 1978 show the car in the garage of Dr. Roy Mustgrove of Windsor, Ontario.
Regularly serviced in his care, by 1981 records show the car then with Don Chornomydz of Union Bay, British Columbia and then Peter Erglis, Esq. of Scarborough, Ontario from 1984 through to the mid-'90s when he sold the car back to Mr. Chornomydz. Peter Bateman of Blaine, Washington, would acquire it in the early-2000s before selling it onto the penultimate owner, Miles Felton of West Vancouver, British Columbia. During all of this ownership, records were meticulously kept with over 150 pages of them on file in a binder. Acquired by the current owner in 2009, the car has been on static display since purchase.
Showing just under 56,000 miles – a figure that is likely original based on the service history but cannot be guaranteed as such – the car presents nicely with a well-kept, original interior. Having been unused in the past dozen years, mechanical recommissioning is recommended prior to active use. Accompanied by copies of its Aston Martin build records, a tool roll, original copies of the DBS Workshop Manual and Parts Catalog, and a thick binder of receipts, it is offered today as the perfect basis for restoration or refurbishment.
