In the mid-1950s, Carlo Abarth, the famous Italian wizard, set his sights on the brand new Fiat 600. With four big Borgo pistons and a re-bore to reach 747 cc, a home-made intake pipe to bolt on a Weber 32 carburettor, a competizione air filter and a custom-made marmita, the Fiat 600 Gran Turismo derivazione Abarth wasted no time in making its mark and wreaking havoc in 750 class competition... and on the road! Carlo Abarth presented a Zagato body version of his elegant saloon car at the 1956 Turin Motor Show. This first version, called the 750 GT, featured Zagato’s famous double-bubble roof, and gave the model its letters of nobility, with numerous successes in competition.
With 44 hp and 535 kg on the scales, the little all-aluminium scorpion propelled its occupants to 160 km/h on the clock. In 1959 and 1960, to complete the series, twenty-five cars were produced by Abarth and Zagato, with steel bodies and aluminium doors. Called Sestriere, they featured a “flat” roof and two enormous scoops on the rear bonnet: they were the rarest of the line. Our example was probably sold new in the USA, as it was found in California in the early 2000s by a British enthusiast who had it partially restored. The base, which was sound and complete, was dismantled and initial bodywork work was carried out, in particular on the aluminium doors.
The previous owner bought the car as is in 2014, and undertook a competitive restoration at the renowned Arnold Classic: the photos accompanying the car’s file bear witness to work of a rare quality. Barely finished, the car will be sent to Abarth in Italy for certification. The experts in the Classiche department will be able to confirm the quality of the restoration and the attention to detail. It’s true that our test drive of this endearing Abarth proved surprising: the car performs well, but - above all - the controls and reactions confirm that the restoration was ‘as new’. This is undoubtedly one of the finest Abarth 750s available for sale.
It’s a car that’s just waiting to hit the road, and why not shine again in historic competition, in particular the Tour Auto, where it’s eligible. The car’s matching engine, also refurbished and installed in a bespoke frame, will be available from the vendor after the sale.
