Developed into its ultimate M635CSi specification by BMW’s “M” (Motorsport) division with power delivered by a wet-sump version of the M1 3.5L DOHC 6-cylinder engine, the M635CSi debuted at Frankfurt in 1983. Best known as the M6, it was produced in five distinct variations depending upon the destination market. In particular, North American export examples (Model 5514) were emission compliant, with the Type S38B35 engine utilizing a catalytic converter-equipped exhaust, and produced an SAE-rated 256 HP. Model 5514 production spanned November 1986 through September 1988. All M6 bodyshells were built by Karmann in Osnabrück, Germany, with final assembly by BMW in Dingolfing, West Germany.
