This 2006 Subaru WRX coupe is famous to moviegoers as a stunt car in the 2017 hit action film “Baby Driver” starring Ansel Elgort in the title role as a youthful loner strong-armed into being a getaway driver for a veteran criminal. Directed by Edgar Wright, the movie was notable for stunt coordinator Robert Nagle’s innovative choreography that synchronized the actors’ movements with the soundtrack, but it was the red Subaru’s whirling flights across a cityscape fraught with obstacles that had moviegoers at the edge of their seats.
Jeremy Fry, who executed the Subaru’s stunts—including the opening bank heist scene—explained in an interview how the Subaru was chosen for the part: “Edgar [Wright] wanted a pedestrian kind of car that would blend in but something that would also be cool … Robert Nagle had figured the WRX as a pretty cool car that we don’t see much that might give us some options to do some cool driving with. There’s a few different sequences in the movie. The Subaru is featured in the first heist where everything goes great.” Of course, the Subaru’s legacy as an international rally champion more than helped Wright, Nagle and Fry to arrive at the decision.
Indeed, the famed alleyway scene showed just how adept a WRX could be in close quarters with a talented driver at the wheel, and Fry had plenty of material to work with. The WRX incorporates an all-wheel-drive ST1 drivetrain swapped in by Allpro Subaru in Alpharetta, Georgia, endowing it with that model’s turbocharged and intercooled 2.5L/300 HP engine. Performance was pumped up even higher with forged CP pistons, an Exedy Stage 1 clutch, OS Giken front differential and Cusco rear limited-slip differential, and a CNC hydraulic hand brake, all in service to executing those high-speed 180s.
