The vehicle of choice in the Porsche Carrera Cup and international Porsche Supercup series, the Porsche GT3 has also won seven GT class championships in the American Le Mans series, finished first overall in the 24 Hours of Daytona and taken six outright wins in the Nürburgring 24 Hours. In 2007, Porsche offered the GT3 RS, a lightweight version fitted with the wider body and functional components needed to homologate the new RSR aimed at the Le Mans series in both North America and Europe.
Weight savings were realized with a thinner rear window, carbon fiber for the front and rear deck lids and adjustable rear spoiler and extensive use of Alcantara inside, including on the steering wheel and lightweight bucket seats. The RS was easily identified by the high rear wing, redesigned front valence and reversed-out “GT3 RS” body-side lettering that recalled the original 1973 Carrera RS. Like the GT3, the RS (meaning Rennsport or Racing) was armed with the 997’s new dry-sump 3.8L flat-6 engine, using double overhead cams, four valves per cylinder, titanium connecting rods, direct injection, VarioCam adjustable valve timing and center-exit exhaust for a rating of 415 HP.
Teamed with a single-mass flywheel and a rugged 6-speed manual transmission, the flat-6 launches the RS to a heady 192 MPH and possesses the grip and response for which race-tuned Porsches are renowned. The yellow brake calipers behind this 2007 Porsche GT3 RS’ Black Dymag wheels denote the presence of Porsche’s optional carbon-ceramic brakes.
A one-owner example driven just 565 miles since new, this white RS weighs in at just over 3,000 pounds while still offering ABS, Porsche Active Suspension Management, leather upholstery with Alcantara accents, AM/FM/CD sound, cruise and climate control, power windows, mirrors and door locks and the optional Sport Chrono Package, a serious sports car for the serious Porsche enthusiast.
