Following the relocation of the Porsche works from Gmünd in Austria to Stuttgart, Germany, in 1950, the marque’s foundational 356 enjoyed steadily increasing production. Luxurious, well-appointed and relatively expensive, the 356 quickly earned worldwide fame as an ideal choice for spirited cross-country drives and transcontinental jaunts. Marking the first major update to the 356 series, the 356 A, known internally as “Type 1” or “T1,” debuted for 1955 with myriad detail, mechanical and visual refinements enhancing buyer appeal and ensuring continued development and refinement through the mid-1960s.
Offered from a longtime Porsche collector’s estate, this 1957 Porsche 356A Coupe bears chassis No. 58705 and, of course, features the sophisticated “T1” body produced by the Reutter Coachworks, one of Porsche’s preferred body suppliers in period. The chassis number indicates this is a later-production example of these highly sought-after Porsche classics. Finished in Code 5604 Elfenbein (Ivory) paint, the 356A is enhanced by chrome bumperettes and early-1957 “Beehive”-style taillights. The tan interior features a painted dashboard, bucket seats, VDO gauges and an AM/FM/cassette radio.
It should be noted that the currently-installed, mid-1964 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia flat 4-cylinder engine (No. 7749358) is not in running order. Porsche 1300cc Type 589/2 engine parts are included with the vehicle, housed in a box with correct identification numbers. A 4-speed manual transmission and chrome wheels with Porsche center crests finish this fascinating and highly desirable postwar German sporting legend.
