For 1963, there were some dramatic changes for potential General Motors buyers, one being the visual reworking of the Pontiac Wide Track line. The Catalina hardtop offered here is a real representative of the breed’s sharp edges and aggressive stance that arrived for the ’63 model season and has further benefits. Today, in place of a 389 Trophy powerplant is a Pontiac 455 CI V-8 engine from a bit later in Pontiac’s history. This engine became a powerhouse as the Sixties closed out, showing up in 1970 as the premier optional powerplant on this model.
Equipped with the retractable underhood lamp in this instance, the engine is backed up by the Borg-Warner Super T10 4-speed manual transmission and there is also a Safe-T-Track Positraction differential following that. This car features power steering and power brakes and furthermore sports the aluminum brake-cooling 8-lug wheels that were exclusive to the Wide-Track models. Incidentally, all of these items were extra-cost on this model, which Pontiac marketed as the economical variation of the full-size Pontiac line.
The exterior is richly covered in Nocturne Blue paint, and the body for this year features laid-back A-pillars with vent windows and a chrome side spear that runs the entire length of the car. Viewed from behind, one sees the new rear tail lamp design, broader back bumper, and on this car, chrome exhaust extensions. Up front, the grille now featured vertically stacked headlamps, paired grille openings with chrome surrounds, and a centered Pontiac emblem. Inside this car hosts premium optioning like the in-dash clock and Super Deluxe AM radio, the two-tone translucent steering wheel, bucket seats and a Hurst floor shifter with an associated chrome tag on the decklid.
An aftermarket tachometer and underdash monitoring gauges have been added and provenance on this vehicle is via the factory owner’s manual and Protect-O-Plate. Complete with lower rocker chrome, script Catalina model tags and a special red 455 emblem on the rear panel, this Cat is equipped with U.S. Royal redline tires and is ready to be enjoyed.
