Originally built at the Pontiac, Michigan, Assembly Plant and sent to Pontiac Engineering for final assembly, this Mandalay Red 1962 Pontiac Catalina 421 Super Duty with a red interior was delivered to Zone 04, Dealer 024, Bendall Pontiac in Alexandria, Virginia, and is formerly from the Cliff Ernst Collection. It is one of the 179 factory-built Super Duty Pontiacs built for the 1962 model year and is one of just 45 equipped with aluminum bodywork. True to its race car roots, this Catalina features the 11.0:1 compression, dual-quad, solid-lifter version of the famed 421 Super Duty Pontiac, which was factory-rated at 405 HP.
It is mated to a 4-speed manual transmission with a Hurst shifter and 9.3-inch Pontiac rear end with 4.30:1 gears and Saf-T-Track. Other exclusive Super Duty features include the aforementioned aluminum bodywork including the lightweight aluminum hood, fenders, inner fenders and bumpers. It is set off with a set of eight-lug wheels mounting whitewall tires. This car was treated to a restoration by Scott Tiemann of Supercar Specialities in Portland, Michigan. The restoration was extensively recorded with photography as it progressed, and the car comes with documentation including the PHS paperwork authenticating this Catalina as a factory-built Super Duty.
This car is well-known within the Pontiac community and was featured on the cover of Hemmings Muscle Machines Magazine. With its undisputed provenance, attractive color combination, rare aluminum bodywork and restoration by the country’s premier Pontiac restoration shop, this 1962 421 Super Duty Catalina is very much a top-shelf collectible and would be the perfect centerpiece for a well-curated Pontiac or factory lightweight collector’s stable.
