This black 1962 Pontiac Catalina Super Duty Hardtop from the Cliff Ernst Collection is listed as car No. 142 of 179 cars built in Pete McCarthy’s book, “Pontiac Musclecar Performance, 1955-1979.” It came with the Code 13U dual-quad version of the legendary 421 Super Duty V-8, a race-only powerplant featuring 4-bolt mains, 11.0:1 forged aluminum pistons, forged steel rods and crankshaft, a solid-lifter camshaft and an aluminum intake manifold mounting two 500 CFM Carter AFB 4-barrel carburetors and cast headers flowing into a dual exhaust system.
Today, that original solid-lifter 421 CI V-8 is hooked to a 4-speed manual transmission and power is transferred to a 4.30-geared Saf-T-Track differential. Part of the Cliff Ernst Collection for 35 years and the result of a rotisserie restoration, the Catalina features a variety of lightweight aluminum components including the hood, front bumper and support, rear bumper and wheel hubs. In addition, the original owner had special-ordered steel fenders to work on the car after racing. Inside the tri-tone teal Ventura interior, the Catalina features bucket seats, a dash-mounted tachometer, radio delete and a Hurst shifter.
Other features include power brakes and eight-lug wheels mounting whitewall tires. Pontiac’s Super Duty program reached a new level of sophistication when new NHRA rules that year required cars to be factory-equipped with the specialty racing parts that were being developed at a very rapid pace. The 1962 model year was the first of two years that Pontiac was building race-ready competition vehicles for drag and stock car racing before GM withdrew from all racing activities in January of 1963.
The 1962 Super Duty-equipped Catalinas and Grand Prixs have become extremely desirable collectibles in the years since they were raced, primarily because of their exceptional record of victories and the cutting-edge technology they represent. Documented by photos from before its restoration, an original Pontiac window sticker and the original dealer invoice from Edd Rogers Pontiac-Chevrolet Auto Sales in Sparta, Tennessee, this 1962 Pontiac Catalina Super Duty is among those rare machines and would be a treasured addition to a well-curated private collection or museum.
