In the late 1950s, Pontiac underwent a metamorphosis of styling and marketing, emerging as a youthful, performance-oriented brand with upscale elements and styling that erased its former conservative reputation. This 1959 Pontiac Catalina Convertible is a well-executed, jaw-dropping concept of one of those fine Pontiac designs from the end of the rockin’ decade. Powered by a 1970 455-cubic-inch V-8 engine with a Turbo 400 automatic transmission, the engine is fed by an Edelbrock manifold and carburetor and well dressed with a number of chrome and aluminum parts.
Breathing through headers and Flowmaster dual exhausts, the torquey big-block is sparked by an electronic ignition system and easily motivates the drop-top along the highway, using little effort in finding freeway speeds. Power steering and brakes help provide a semblance of safety and ease of use. A fully bespoke interior of light Dove Grey Ultraleather is fantastically detailed with unique touches such as embossed Pontiac Indian headdress appointments to the door panels, seats and sun visors. The trunk is similarly addressed and introduces the Dart, or more modern Pontiac Arrowhead logo blending modern and classic emblems.
Occupants will revel in the modern comforts of Vintage Air, a custom radio with USB port, custom dual cup holders, remote door locks, custom floor mats and Velvet digital gauge cluster. Rolling on 17-inch Billet wheels, the deep Saturn Purple paint offers subtle graphics that build depth and surprise the eye. Protected by a clear bra, this car is ready to cruise favorite roads without fear of flying stones and will stay protected at home with a car cover. A black Mercedes-Benz cloth top covers the interior when the elements turn nasty and a kill switch provides robust theft protection. Documentation includes receipts and records for a superb custom build of a Catalina convertible.
