In the 1990s, car racing was a popular way for manufacturers to promote their new products. As soon as the 406 was released, Peugeot decided to enter the German Supertourism championship, the most competitive championship of the time. Built by Peugeot Sport with funding from Esso, the 406 boasts over 300 horsepower for less than 1,000 kg. Ready for the 1996 season, it finished third in the championship in its first season and crushed the competition the following year. In 1998, Peugeot Sport decided to concentrate their efforts on the WRC with the release of the 206. The 406s were then entered in the BTCC and raced in the Belgian Procar, ending their career in South America and France in the early 2000s, where they were always competitive.
The car we present today is the ST31 chassis, entered in the South American Supertouring Championship, also called Nations Cup. Raced in Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay, the level was high, with many manufacturers involved. This 406 is one of the two Supertourism cars of the EF Racing team that won the title in 1999, with Brazilian Caca Bueno and Argentine Emiliano Spataro tied in the final round. With 3 wins and 7 podiums in 12 rounds, the 406 #6 defended itself impeccably all season against other 406s, BMW 320i, Alfa Romeo 155 and Opel Vectra, among others. Still in the colors of the 1999 season, original but missing its engine / gearbox unit, this real factory car with a prestigious record of achievements is just waiting to be back on the track.
