It’s said that approximately 30 1949 Packard Customs are known to exist today, and this one has undergone a restoration estimated to cost around $80,000. Presented in the original shade of Packard Blue, the interior has been refreshed to original standards, including the radio, which has been rebuilt and is said to function. The 327 CI inline 8-cylinder engine, which has nine main bearings, has seen about 100 miles since the completion of its rebuild and is mated to a 3-speed manual transmission. Packard long held a reputation for building vehicles of outstanding robustness, something the nine main bearing engine design sustains.
Rolling on wide whitewall tires with steel wheels topped by the famous cloisonne hubcaps, the car is complete with an owner’s manual. After World War II, George Christopher, the president of Packard at the time, expressed concern over the rising competition in car making. To remain at the forefront of luxury car manufacturing, Christopher was adamant that the company produce an all-new model with a streamlined design that would be a clean break from previous Packard styling. The idea caused a lot of commotion, but in March of 1947, the company unveiled its all-new 1948 Super Eight Convertible.
The new design divided the press and public as much as it did Packard management; moto journos called it a goat due to its upstanding grille and an overturned bathtub for obvious reasons. But the New York Fashion Academy awarded the new car a gold medal and named it Fashion Car of the Year. Interestingly, Packard was not alone in this pontoon, torpedo styling with Mercury, Lincoln, Hudson and GM vehicles presenting very similar designs.
