Packard established itself as a premium automobile builder with a focus on durability and robustness in 1899. That spirit echoed through the years at Packard until the very end, and the cars produced between the founding and disbandment of the company have long been regarded as some of the finest American cars ever. In 1948, Packard introduced a heavily restyled line that resonated well with a post-World War II America. The elongated nose and abbreviated rear deck worked in unison with the flowing body that really had the look of being shaped by water and air.
The New York Fashion Academy chose the latest Packard as the Fashion Car of the Year, and luxury car buyers everywhere were impressed with the new Packard. Attempting to broaden brand appeal, Packard also introduced the Station Sedan in 1948, an interesting hybrid sedan and station wagon. Most woody station wagons of the day used bodies constructed largely of wood mounted to a steel frame. But Packard used full steel bodies and doors with wood inlays, except for the rear tail gate door, which is entirely made of wood. The only area where wood is used as a stress-bearing body section is where the rear quarter has been cut away from the sedan body and replaced with wood creating the wagon.
The Station Sedan allowed Packard to offer a wagon to customers without fully reconfiguring the Packard sedan, upon which the wagon was based. This 1948 Packard Station Sedan is believed to be one of approximately 20 known to exist today and was mechanically refreshed in 2010 by Duffy’s Collectible Cars in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The 288 CI inline-8 cylinder engine is linked to a 3-speed manual transmission. Inside is a Tan interior with wood-lined luggage compartment complete with rear seat chrome rub strip accents. The chrome Packard hubcaps work well with the wide whitewall tires, and the car is rounded out by the famous Packard Cormorant hood ornament.
