Finished in Vermont Green, this 1947 Packard Clipper Deluxe Sedan underwent a meticulous, frame-off restoration emerging with a rebuilt 282/125 HP inline 8-cylinder engine and a 3-speed manual transmission. A 12-volt electrical system eases the operation overall, but is especially helpful with the air conditioning. A third brake light adds to the safety of the Packard, and the interior is fitted with a two-tone green leather and gray pinstripe cloth upholstery.
Formerly owned by a Packard collector, enthusiasts of the marque will be quick to point out that the Clipper was a very important model to the company, as it helped save Packard from extinction in spite of being launched just months before the attacks on Pearl Harbor. Packard would produce around 16,600 Clippers in 1941, with only a couple thousand for 1942 before the United States auto industry suspended car production to support the war efforts. Like the Packard One-Twenty of 1935 and the ensuing 1940 One-Ten, the Clipper of 1941 was derived to help achieve higher profit margins for the company by offering people a lower price point.
Simply put, the Clipper didn’t have enough time to do so. On top of that, because Packard purists balked at the One-Twenty and One-Ten aiming to garner customers in the upper-lower and lower-middle market, they became further disenchanted at the brand as the Clipper aimed to attract buyers in the middle-middle market. The Packard fanatics began feeling the company was losing its position in the high-end market, a place Packard set a variety of benchmarks and competed with the world’s finest. Because of this sentiment, even loyalists began shopping elsewhere, losing faith in the brand and, simply put, not wanting to be associated with the lesser-thans now coming into Packard showrooms.
Regardless of their snobbery, the Clipper would be reintroduced for the 1946 model year, and would in fact carry the Packard brand entirely but then disappear for 1948. Both dealers and customers looked forward to the company reasserting itself as a premium brand in the postwar years, only to be disappointed with the introduction of the 200 and 250 models. The Clipper, which was supposed to become its own line, similar to Mercury to Ford and Lincoln, was instead reintroduced as a Packard for 1953. This sustained disappointment among customers and dealers, but the sentiment was ironic, as many agree: the Clipper helped stabilize the brand and kept Packard from going out of business.
