Rolling off the production line in Abingdon in 1955, the MG A succeeded the MG TD and MG TF, bringing a breath of modernity to the post-war marque. With its curves, emphasised by flowing, low-slung lines, this new model turned heads. But in 1958, a “Twin Cam” version appeared, featuring a 1.6-litre engine, an aluminium cylinder head with twin overhead camshafts, and four disc brakes. The MGA was transformed from a peaceful little convertible into a true sports car built for the track. Its 109 horsepower promised enhanced performance, with a top speed of over 180 km/h, enabling it to take on competitors such as Alfa Romeo.
After just two years of production, only 1,788 roadsters and 323 coupés were built, making it a rare and high-performance car. Its British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate tells us that it left the production line on 16 February 1959, equipped with a heater, centre-lock wheels and disc brakes, destined for the American market, where this model was highly sought-after. It arrived in Denmark in 2001, where it was completely dismantled and restored from the chassis up. It remained there for ten years before returning to its homeland, England. Finally, at the end of 2016, it crossed the Channel to France.
In 2018, its current owner acquired it, intending to take part in regularity rallies. A mechanical overhaul costing more than €18,000 followed, to perfect and improve the reliability of this MG A. The work included rectifying and improving the cooling system, rebuilding the cylinder head and reconditioning a liner, replacing the brake master cylinder, and servicing the gearbox, which received new bushings and a selector fork shaft, as well as a new clutch and fork. This roadster is in desirable condition, with a very handsome interior featuring black upholstery with red piping that echoes the body colour.
This iconic red hue perfectly sets off the sensual lines of this roadster, further enhanced by the chrome trim, which is in excellent condition. This MG A Twin Cam Roadster embodies the very essence of the sporting English roadster, offering just as much pleasure behind the wheel, thanks to its fiery twin-cam engine, as it does when admiring its lines at a standstill.
