It was known as a homologation special, a car released for sale to the public to legalize body parts under the rules of the international sanctioning body ACCUS. For Mercury in 1969, newly restyled nose sheet metal was part of this effort, and the Cale Yarborough Special Cyclone Spoiler II came to be as a result. Built in celebration of Yarborough's dramatic 1968 Daytona 500 win for Mercury, this example has been treated to a nut-and-bolt restoration. The package included the 351 CI Ford Windsor V-8 engine, which was painted corporate blue and backed by the Merc-O-Matic 3-speed FMX automatic transmission and a 3.25:1 rear axle.
Power steering and power front disc brakes are also part of its appointments. This car features the restyled Talladega-style aerodynamic front end, hood scoop and rear deck wing, with the exterior cloaked in the exclusive Wimbledon White with a red roof, red decklid and red side stripes, as well as Cale Yarborough Special front fender decals. Like all Mercury models, the interior is upscale, finished in a red color scheme with a front bench seat, 120 MPH speedometer, wood-grain applique, driver’s side remote mirror and a Philco AM radio. In addition to its performance trim, this car has dual body-color outside mirrors and rides on sport wheels with trim rings and Goodyear Polyglas tires.
These cars were unique to their era and the Cale Yarborough Special was only offered this one time. Among the provenance for this homologation special will be a broadcast sheet showing its options and a restoration binder.
