Boasting a chassis/body of mainly aluminium construction, the GT is powered by a hand-built M178 V8 engine. Positioned well back in the wheelbase for better weight distribution, this might power plant produces 469bhp in the mainstream model with 515 horsepower on tap in the GT S. The transmission consists of a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox incorporated into a rear transaxle, again with ideal weight distribution in mind (Mercedes claim what it calls an optimum 47/53% front/rear split). The GT was face-lifted in 2017, gaining a little more power in the process.
In recent years Mercedes-AMG has produced several limited edition 'Black Series' variants of its high performance models, and the GT is no exception. Introduced for 2021, the Black Series version came with all of 720 horsepower on tap courtesy of extensive changes made to the M178 engine. The suspension system is unique to the Black Series, with camber adjustable at both front and rear, and the model also came with carbon-ceramic brake discs a standard. Mostly made of carbon fibre, the body incorporates numerous aerodynamic devices, including an active aero flap in the rear wing. Claimed performance figures for the Black Series were a 0-100km/h in 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 325km/h.
On 4th November 2020 a Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series driven by Maro Engel set a new record for production vehicles at the fearsome Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit with a lap in 6:43.616.
The 'Project One' version of the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series was created specially for the 275 customers who had ordered the German manufacturer's eponymous plug-in hybrid hypercar, which had been announced in 'concept' form in 2017. The Project One featured a hybrid petrol/electric power train derived from Formula 1 technology, but getting it to work in a series production road car took a lot longer than Mercedes had expected. Production did not begin until August 2022, by which time the car had been renamed Mercedes-AMG ONE.
Despite a price tag of $2.72 million, Mercedes could have sold four times the planned production of 275 but preferred to stick with that number to maintain its exclusivity. As a reward for their customers' patience, Mercedes offered them the opportunity to buy a special Project One version of the Black Series; if you hadn't ordered a Project One, you couldn't buy one of the Black Series spin-offs. The Black Series Project One was inspired by Mercedes' 2019 W10 Formula 1 car, featuring two-tone livery with teal accents inside and out as a reference to Petronas, the team's title sponsor. It was available at a premium of around €40,000 above the price of the regular Black Series.
One of only 275 built, the stunning Mercedes-AMG Black Series Project One Edition we offer was delivered new to the Netherlands in June 2022. It was road registered in September 2022 but has covered 'delivery mileage' only. Currently showing a trifling 35 kilometres on the odometer, it is presented in effectively 'as new' condition throughout and is offered from an important Mercedes-Benz collection in Europe. The car comes with the manufacturer's Certificate of Conformity; a list of fitted options; German registration papers; and all its original books.
