When Mazda unveiled the second-generation RX7 for 1986, it was in a similar philosophy yet a vast departure from the firstgGeneration. A rear seat was included on some, and the styling was hugely ahead of its time as a fluid look that others would follow. The body was longer and wider and sat slightly lower than the first generation, and a unique curved-glass rear hatch took the place of the three-piece design used on the original RX7. A lot of the styling nodded to the Porsche 924 and 944, a comparison that was not lost on customers and was both welcomed and shunned at the same time.
Mazda spent a good deal of time and money improving the chassis as well, which included an advanced independent suspension, rack-and-pinion steering, an improved braking system and wider, lower-profile, larger-diameter tires. The Second Generation marked a commendable effort and hosted styling that lent itself easily to a convertible application, which Mazda introduced for 1988. An impressive effort, the RX7 convertible top provided a Targa or full convertible experience and was the first production convertible to offer a rear wind deflector.
Another first, the convertible top mechanism was manufactured as one unit and placed in the car after the car was assembled, saving time on the assembly line. By the time Mazda stopped exporting the RX7 convertible to the U.S. in 1991, just about 22,000 had been sold, marking it as a successful venture.
