The Land Rover Defender, or 90 and 110 models, date back to the very tail end of World War II. In the spirit of the war-designed Willys Jeep, the Land Rover was meant to be a vehicle that could go anywhere and do anything. As such, the original market was heavily aimed at farms and ranches, but government was also a large piece of the pie. To ensure success, knock-down kits were sent to factories around the world, where the vehicles were assembled and sold in a much more cost-effective manner than shipping assembled vehicles.

The 90 and 110 referred to the vehicle’s wheelbase, while Defender was a name on and off applied to the Land Rovers, depending on where the vehicle was in the world and what era. Popular, the Defender made a quick name for itself on some of the most grueling terrains in the world. It seemed there was nowhere a Land Rover couldn’t conquer. Celebrating the legend, Land Rover improved upon the Defender’s image, creating a bit more of a boulevardier while retaining the robust and capable nature of the Defender. It sold well, especially throughout Europe and the United States, but then, the last classic Defender rolled off the assembly line, ending a 67-year production run.

The Defender faced a number of increasing safety and emissions regulations that, to meet them, would have been far too expensive. While the Defender name lives on, the original version is exceedingly difficult to get in North America, especially in decent condition. This 1992 Defender 110 is finished in black with a black leather bucket-seat interior highlighted by gray accents. The exterior is equipped with a body color-matched roof rack with lighting, as well as matching nerf bars, front and rear bumpers, five-spoke alloy wheels, grille and headlight surrounds and more for a truly noir image.

Upgraded with a Puma inline 4-cylinder diesel engine that is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, the Defender of course offers 4-wheel drive. Passengers will appreciate the bucket seats up front and bench in the rear, along with the air conditioning, power windows, custom three-spoke steering wheel and updated Sony AM/FM/CD stereo.
