The most important change to Jaguar's Mark 2-derived S-Type was, of course, the adoption of independent rear suspension similar to that of the E-Type sports car andMark 10 saloon. As well as the usual improvements to road-holding and ride quality associated with IRS, the new rear suspension set-up enabled Jaguar's designers to move the rear seats back 3" (76mm), creating more legroom. Other interior changes included a Mark 10-type fresh-air heating and ventilation system and all-new seats, the fronts having reclining backrests as well as being adjustable for height and reach.
There was also a much larger boot, similar in shape to the Mark 10's, offering an impressive 19 cubic feet (0.54 cubic metres) of luggage space compared to the Mark 2's 12 cubic feet. Despite possessing superior handling and greater range than the Mark 2, the S-Type has lived in the shadow of its illustrious predecessor and tends to be undervalued even today.
Unfortunately, nothing is known of the history of this automatic transmission S-Type other than being acquired by the present owner in circa 2015. No paperwork is available and it has since been on static display and require recommissioning prior to road use.
