Finished in the rare color of Egg Yolk Yellow, this 2005 Ford Focus Saleen S121 (No. 05-0129) shows nearly 80,905 miles on the odometer and is powered by a 2.0L inline 4-cylinder engine and 5-speed manual transmission. From the factory, the Focus came with front disc brakes, but to improve the overall handling, Saleen installed its own Racecraft suspension system, a front strut tower brace and Saleen-designed six-spoke alloy wheels. A Saleen-designed body kit has been grafted onto the body, including front and rear facias, side skirts and a spoiler, with the rear fascia housing a center-exit exhaust system. Saleen-specific graphics have also been applied.
The black leather interior provides amenities such as air conditioning, power windows, power locks, a factory AM/FM/CD stereo system, a rear window defroster and cruise control, and it has been treated to Saleen white-faced instrumentation. The Saleen name has been synonymous with fast Fords for decades, particularly Mustangs, but when Ford introduced the Focus to the American market for the 2000 model year, Saleen and Ford both saw a lot of potential. Ford introduced the factory Hot Rod Focus SVT and Saleen introduced the Focus N20 and the S121. The N20 was the world’s first vehicle that was factory-prepped for nitrous oxide, hence the name N20.
The S121 carried a similar body kit, interior enhancements and chassis modifications but remained otherwise stock under the hood. While the N20 was factory prepped to receive nitrous oxide, the bottle was empty and buyers had to install the kit themselves, a task that was supposed to take just about an hour. Interestingly, the system included an automatic on-off switch which engaged and disengaged at specific RPMs to help thwart engine failure. Despite this safety feature, Saleen warned buyers that the moment the kit was installed the engine warranty was voided.
While the nitrous indeed improved performance, Motor Trend magazine shaved 2 seconds off the 0-60 MPH time (making it about 6.4 seconds) and the quarter-mile time (about 14 seconds); everyone was very impressed by the ride quality and the handling as well. It was understood that the S121, while not as quick, offered drivers spectacular responsiveness and handling.
