To look at a Fiat 600 Sedan and see just a cute car is to overlook not only its place in history; but the incredible technological accomplishments of a car once called “miraculous,” as well. Despite a similar appearance, the 600 shares almost nothing with the ‘Cinquecento’ 500, and is the first monocoque car Fiat ever made. The tidy dimensions hide the fact that four adults fit inside a 600, a front seat nearly over the front axle and second row dropped down into the frame still leaving room for luggage in the back.
Underneath those bags you’ll find a four-speed transaxle and a 633cc watercooled engine that proved so successful it went on to find a home in Fiat 850s and 127s for years to come. Most famous for both the 600 Jolly beach cars and 600 Multipla microvans, Fiat went on to sell more than four million assorted 600s. Relatively few of the rolltop 600 sunroof sedans survive today, however, and its estimated that the Jolly actually outnumbers this classic. This example is less than 500 miles from a restoration by an Italian car specialist, appropriately finished in classic Fiat Light Green with whitewalls and complimentary tri-tone interior.
The engine and interior are correctly and highly finished in period-correct style, with tight upholstery and lovely chrome for a picture-perfect postcard that evokes the Italian seaside. Originally selling for less than the 500C and offering room for a family, Fiat’s 600 made car ownership possible for the first time for an entire generation of Italians still struggling with Postwar hardship. Its clever packaging, nimble handling and sunny appearance have given it a place in hearts ever since.
