Austrian born engineer Carlo Abarth set up as an independent tuning company in Turin. From producing induction and exhaust systems, Abarth branched out into selling performance kits primarily for Fiat production cars, later building a highly successful series of aerodynamically stylish sports prototypes and limited series production cars. The company would lead the way in converting these fun little cars into successful fast road and racing cars of the period. With genuine Abarth models now seeing some extraordinary prices, it is no surprise that many have been converted to replicate these versions of the Fiat 500.
This example was supplied new by Haynes Continental Motors, Oxford and was first registered on 7th November 1969. Unusually the Fiat was retained by the dealership owner who subsequently gifted the car to his wife. The Haynes family finally sold the car in 2012 with 66,654 miles showing on the odometer. The new owner continued to maintain the car to the highest of standards completing an engine upgrade to 750cc, which included a balanced crank, skimmed and gas flowed head with larger valves and twin weber carburettors. A four speed all synchromesh gearbox was also fitted making for a very nippy example indeed!
Offered in striking Positano Yellow, this Abarth is reported to both drive and present very nicely. The exhaustive history file that accompanies the car includes the original green log book, documents detailing continuous maintenance work and the current UK V5C registration document. This truly wonderful little motor car is ready to be used and enjoyed by a new custodian.
