Who hasn't dreamed of owning a Ferrari? Usually, the 12-cylinder variety are the most sought after as years go by, but there's nothing wrong with a Ferrari of lesser cylinders. Of particular interest in the last few years has been the Testarossa, which debuted in 1984, a successor to the Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer, or BB. Named for the famous Testa Rossa from the 1950s, the name translates to 'Red Head,' indicative of the Red color at the heads. The BB was a fabulous car, but it had some shortcomings, which Testarossa aimed to correct. From the onset it was leaps and bounds ahead of the BB—the Testarossa featured a trunk in front, and space behind the seats to accommodate luggage.
The car was wider and taller, providing more headroom, easier entry and exit, and simply a more comfortable cabin, less claustrophobic. The Testarossa used two radiators in the back of the car, cooled by air brought in through the massive strakes running down the sides of the car, which corrected cooling deficiencies the BB was reputed to suffer from. The air brought in by the side strakes was also directed upward and out the top end of the rear hatch. This created substantial downforce, eliminating the need for a large rear wing. Bottom line, and as things usually go with evolution, the Testarossa was a much more rewarding car to own and drive.
More comfortable, easier visibility, more powerful, more reliable and much more capable of meeting the emissions and safety standards that the United States required. The Flat-12 engine used by the Testarossa is largely the same engine used by the BB, but with several refinements. The changes led to a much smoother power delivery and increased horsepower to 380. In recent years, these Testarossas have been climbing steadily in value and are expected to continue to do so. Consider this 1989 Ferrari Testarossa in Rosso Corsa over Tan. It shows 16,341 miles, which are believed to be original, and only 1,700 miles ago the car was treated to a major engine-out service.
