By the end of the 1980s, the hugely successful 308-line of V-8-powered sports cars was overdue for a reimagining. Late in the decade, Ferrari began development work on its replacement, the 348, which would prove to be the last car developed under Enzo Ferrari’s leadership and the last Ferrari penned by influential Pininfarina designer Leonardo Fioravanti. Introduced at the 1989 Frankfurt Auto Show, at its heart, the new 348 featured an enlarged 3.4L, quad-cam, 4-valve V-8 engine now mounted longitudinally in the chassis and mated to a transversely mounted, 5-speed gearbox.
With dual Bosch Motronic engine management computers and a dry-sump lubrication system, the 348’s engine produced 296 HP at 7,200 RPM and 238-lb-ft of torque. This potent powerplant enabled the 348 to launch from zero to 60 MPH in 5.6 seconds with a top speed of 171 MPH, and with the benefit of double redundant antilock brakes, the 348 could decelerate from 60 MPH back down to zero in a mere 128 feet. In a styling departure from the previous decade’s 308/328 line of cars, Fioravanti styled the new 348 with design influences borrowed from the highly acclaimed Testarossa and F40 Ferraris, such as pronounced side air intake strakes and rectangular tail lights.
Offered in berlinetta (TB), targa top (TS) and spider body styles, the 348 would prove to be immensely popular with 2,894 examples of the 348 TB and 4,228 examples of the 348 TS produced between 1989 and 1995, when the 348 was replaced with the F355. One of just 1,090 produced, this 1995 Ferrari 348 Spider is finished in Rossa Corsa with a tan leather interior. Its 3.4L V-8 engine pushes its 320 HP through a 5-speed manual transmission with gated shifter to a limited-slip differential, with independent front and rear suspension and 4-wheel disc brakes tucked behind five-spoke alloy wheels on tap to help keep that power under control. The clutch was replaced about 2,000 miles ago.
