  • Believed to be one of just eleven 348 GT Competiziones constructed by Michelotto
  • Tested at Fiorano by 1990 Le Mans winner John Nielsen prior to delivery to first owner Peter Andersen
  • Competed in Ferrari-Porsche Challenge, Ferrari Challenge and Ferrari Racing Days events from 1994 to 2003
  • Numbers-matching engine, as denoted on factory build sheet, a copy of which is retained

Developed in conjunction with long-time Ferrari Sports and GT car development partner Michelotto - whose previous briefs had included the 308 GTB Group 4, 333 SP and F40 LM – it is believed that just eleven examples of the 348 GT Competizione were produced between 1993 and 1994.

Utilising a standard 348 GTB monocoque chassis, albeit suitably strengthened by a six-point roll cage, the GTC benefitted from improved engine mapping - increasing power from 320 bhp to 360 bhp - as well as F40-derived 15-inch brakes and driveshafts. Road-going niceties such as the heating/air conditioning unit, carpets, door glass and adjustable seats were dispensed with, the last two being replaced by weight-saving Perspex and carbon fibre-shelled racing seats respectively. This, combined with the fitment of carbon fibre doors and magnesium 18-inch Speedline wheels, ensured a corresponding reduction in dry weight from 1,393 to just 1,180 kilos.

Of the eleven chassis produced, only two raced in contemporary top line competition; the Jolly Club’s car securing class wins in the 1993 and 1994 Italian GT Championship, and the Shelton Brothers’ example finishing a commendable 16th overall in the 1994 Daytona 24 Hours. This particular chassis, 98226, was acquired by Danish amateur racer Peter Andersen via Danish Ferrari importer Daamgard-Nielsen Automobiler on 3 May 1994. Interestingly, prior to delivery, the importer arranged a private test of the car for its new owner at Fiorano during which he shared the driving duties with noted development driver and 1990 Le Mans winner John Nielsen.

Andersen raced the car extensively over the next decade, principally in Ferrari-Porsche Challenge and Ferrari Challenge events. Highlights included a race win at the Nürburgring GT Festival in 1996, a third at the prestigious Spa Racing Days event in 1998 and a win and second place in the two-part Ferrari Challenge race at the 2003 Copenhagen Historic Grand Prix. Appropriately, the car’s final contemporary race was also in Denmark, where Andersen and compatriot Michael Outzen recorded a fine fourth place in the 2003 Padborg Park Four Hours.

Throughout the car’s competitive career, it was prepared by Ferrari Team Kroymans; the eponymous race preparation arm of erstwhile Dutch Ferrari importer Frits Kroymans. Indeed, the car retains a small plaque affixed to the centre console inscribed “Ferrari Import Kroymans gratuliert dem schnellsten Dänen im Ferrari Challenge 1997”, which translates as “Ferrari Import Kroymans congratulates the fastest Dane in the Ferrari Challenge 1997”; a mark of the affection in which both car and driver were held by the team.

Acquired by the vendor directly from Andersen last year, 98226 is presented in glorious condition; its distinctive “Scuderia Salmoni” livery a somewhat tongue-in-cheek reference to its long-term owner’s business background in wholesale fish import/export. Boasting impeccable provenance, a fascinating history and its numbers-matching engine, chassis 98226 offers a rare and comparatively affordable introduction to the rarefied world of authentic Ferrari Competizione ownership.

In addition to its eligibility for the popular Masters and Global Endurance Legends series, the 348 GTC is one of just twelve Ferrari GT models eligible for the factory-organised Club Competizioni GT events, rendering it a highly usable and versatile example of a “modern breed” GT car, and one in which the spirit of its illustrious Competizione-designated forebears truly lives on.
