The result of an extensive, factory-correct restoration, this 1959 Chevrolet El Camino is finished in red and is accompanied by a binder of restoration receipts attesting to the parts and labor bringing it to life. Powered by a 348 CI V-8 engine with a Tri-Power setup and an automatic transmission, it is also fitted with power steering and power brakes, making the car-truck much easier to drive and maneuver, particularly in tight spaces. The grey interior is fitted with a pushbutton AM radio, armrests and a right-hand sun visor.
Upholstered in duo-tone light and medium gray vinyl with patterned light and medium gray and black cloth seating inserts, the El Camino has a very fashionable appearance. Building on that period chic, the El Camino boasts a high level of brightwork inside and out, from the grille and bumper, to the hood and fender trim, the side trim and more. The 1959 El Camino borrowed a number of cues from the Chevrolet full-size line of the same year, including the cat’s-eye tail lights and “V” tailgate design leading into the canted fins. The first El Caminos were offered on October 16, 1958, offering customers a way to combine the comforts and amenities of a car with the utilitarian values of a truck.
It’s been said that the idea came from a farmer’s wife in Victoria, Australia, who wrote to Ford in the 1930s about building a vehicle that could respectfully shuttle her to church on Sundays while helping her husband get the pigs to the market on Monday. The note was taken seriously, and Lewis Brandt, an engineer at Ford, designed a pickup based on a sedan chassis creating what the Australians have long referred to as a Ute. The concept was hugely popular Down Under, but it didn’t catch on in the U.S. until 1957, when Ford introduced the Ranchero.
