With an estimated $300,000 invested in the restoration of this 1958 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham, it presents fabulously. The chrome, aluminum and stainless trim radiate against the black paint, especially the legendary brushed stainless-steel top. The interior matches the exterior in black and white with extensive brightwork and leather appointments. Only 300 Eldorado Broughams were built in 1958, which is easy to understand; it cost more than $13,000, marking it as the most expensive production car of the year. There is no question that the Eldorado Brougham offered a lot of car for the money, such as a six-way power seat with favorite-position memory.
The trunk lid was electrically operated, and air conditioning was standard. Front and rear passengers could enjoy armrests, which were quite the amenities at a time when most cars didn’t have them, even high-end luxury cars. A unique throwback to the carriage days were the center-opening doors, which while they were a unique design feature, it was also a necessity due to the lower roofline. Center-opening doors facilitated easier ingress and egress to the rear seating areas. Cadillacs were long known for a plush ride, but the Eldorado Brougham pushed the envelope with a 4-wheel air-suspension system that provided an infinitely smoother ride over conventional suspensions.
It also maintained a constant body height, regardless of the load, and provided flatter, more stable handling, especially in curves and corners. Powered by a 365 CI V-8, three carburetors fed the engine while a 4-speed automatic transmission smoothly transferred the power to the rear wheels with relatively imperceptible shifts. The Eldorado Brougham not only delivered the finer lifestyle Cadillac depicted in its advertising, but catapulted the Wreath and Crest to the pinnacle of engineering, design and luxury as well, establishing Cadillac as the benchmark in the industry, or the “Standard of the World.”
