Returned to the BMW model range for 2020 after having been on hiatus since 1997, the 8-series designation delivered a surprise package for Bimmer enthusiasts in the form of the all-new M8 Competition. Featuring chiseled bodylines and available in two-door and four-door Gran Coup guises, the M8 competition delivers amazing performance worthy of its hallowed BMW M heritage. Serving up a factory-rated 617 HP from its twin-turbo, 4.4L V-8 powerplant, the M8 Competition is an electrifying performer with credentials including acceleration from rest to 60 MPH in just 2.5 seconds, the quarter mile at 10.7 seconds and 129 MPH through the traps—quicker than Ferrari’s track-oriented 488 Pista.
Handling is equally impressive, with the M8 Competition capable of 1.03 G lateral acceleration on the test skid pad. Anchor-like stopping power—from 70 MPH to zero in just 146 feet—is provided with large-diameter, carbon ceramic brake rotors. Other M8 Competition technicalities include electrically assisted steering with both variable assist and a variable ratio. This very special M8 Competition Gran Coupe is Car No. 8 of the 8 BMW M8 First Editions produced for 2020. The 4.4L/617 HP twin-turbocharged V-8 powerplant is paired with an automatic transmission, harnessed by the aforementioned carbon ceramic brakes.
