This fresh-from-the-factory 2015 BMW i8 from Harman International Industries will be auctioned with all net proceeds to benefit The Stowers Institute for Medical Research with a minimum guaranteed donation of $50,000. The biomedical research organization is dedicated to improving human health by studying the fundamental processes of life with nearly 550 researchers and support personnel employed. In 2014, the newly introduced BMW i8 was named as Top Gear magazine’s global Car of the Year.
The luxury plug-in hybrid managed to marry true high-performance to environmental friendliness and efficiency, and it did so wearing a sleek, futuristic body style that gives it the racy look that is typically more synonymous with supercars. One would be hard-pressed to try to claim that the i8 doesn’t in fact qualify as a supercar though, despite its electric engine components. While the eDrive two-speed automatic electric motor delivers 129 horses to the front wheels, the 1.5-liter combustion TwinPower Turbo three-cylinder engine with high-precision direct injection drives 228 horses through the six-speed rear automatic transmission.
In all, the car is capable of 357-horsepower total output and 420 lb-ft of torque with a zero-to-60 time of just 4.2 seconds. As Charlie Turner put it, the editor in chief at Top Gear, “The BMW is a milestone in the annals of automotive history and a glorious statement for an exciting and positive future. The i8 delivers—and then some. It’s the kind of car we should celebrate, a beautiful vision of the future, delivered now.” With an MSRP of $148,295, this particular i8 is equipped with the $10,800 2015 limited-edition Pure Impulse World package. It wears Sophisto Grey Metallic paint with contrasting accents in signature BMW i Frozen Blue.
The 20-inch BMW i Light Ally W Spoke wheels finish off the attention-grabbing exterior while the interior is just as bold yet tastefully stunning with Carum Spice Grey full-perforated leather surfaces, full-color head-up display, iDrive system with high-resolution 10.2-inch full-color flat-screen display with BMW Navigation Professional, voice command and advanced real time traffic information. The premium Harman Kardon Logic® 7 surround sound system for the BMW i8 had to be special. Very special. BMW engineers invested a great deal of time into weight reduction. The same goes for acoustic experts at Harman Kardon.
For example, at 500 grams, the subwoofer is extremely lightweight and requires only half as much energy for its impressive performance compared to conventional deep-bass speakers. The BMW i8 is driven by energy-efficient, zero-emissions electric motors; the Harman Kardon sound system is driven by the digital Class-D amplifier. This compact powerhouse has enormous power reserves for truly exuberant dynamism. Eleven high-performance speakers and a compact, clever DSP amplifier with Class-D technology and 360-watt total output are the impressive figures of a musical heavyweight.
The mid-range speakers and tweeters in the BMW i8 are integrated into the top of the C-pillar for even more realistic musical reproduction and a sound that fills the whole interior. The 23cm sub-midrange speaker between the back seats unfurls the acoustic field from the back and allows passengers to literally feel the beat going through and through.
