At the 2013 International Motor Show in Germany, BMW unveiled the production version of one of its most innovative, high-performance vehicles, the i8. Based on its 2013 Concept Vision EfficientDynamics concept car, the i8 would be BMW’s first plug-in hybrid sports car that mated a small, internal combustion engine with a powerful electric motor. Designed by Benoit Jacob—with styling cues that paid homage to BMW’s earlier M1 sports car—the i8 featured a transversely mounted, 1.5L turbocharged 3-cylinder engine that fed 228 HP to the rear wheels, while a 129 HP hybrid synchronous electric motor drove the front wheels.
Utilizing a 2-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission and regenerative braking, the combined power of the two systems enabled the i8 to accelerate from 0-60 MPH in 4.4 seconds, with an electronically controlled top speed of 155 MPH, while yielding a combined fuel efficiency of 112 MPG.
