The final Bentley built on a separate chassis, the S3 was introduced in 1962. The most notable physical difference between the new model and its predecessor was the twin headlamps, while the overriders were made smaller, and the front indicators and side lamps were repositioned into a single unit, resulting in a cleaner appearance overall. The S3's interior featured individual front seats in place of the split bench found in earlier S-Types and some were specified with electric windows and front seat belts. Under the bonnet, the S3 was the same as the S2, with a 6230cc Rolls-Royce V8 engine and automatic gearbox.
This early S3 is elegantly presented in Midnight Blue with a complementary light blue leather interior and navy blue Wilton carpets. Formerly finished in white, the car now benefits from a far more understated and sophisticated colour scheme that perfectly complements its handsome coachwork. The interior remains particularly inviting, with the leather upholstery and headlining both in good order, while the walnut veneer presents exceptionally well throughout. Our vendor has taken excellent care of the vehicle in the five years he’s owned it; recent mechanical work has included a full brake overhaul with new linings, master cylinders, pipes, fluid, servo and wheel cylinders.
The engine has also had an overhaul with new pistons and liners fitted, having previously been fully rebuilt in 2020, prior to our vendor’s ownership. Now offered for sale as the vendor seeks to reduce the size of his collection, this elegant S3 presents an excellent opportunity to acquire one of the most desirable post-war Bentleys. Combining timeless styling, exceptional craftsmanship and substantial recent expenditure, it is a refined and eminently usable example of Bentley’s final separate-chassis saloon.
