Tracing its heritage back to the DBR racers of the 1950s that won the 1959 24 Hours of Le Mans and World Sports Car Championship, the Aston Martin Volante came to represent high-performance luxury motoring at its finest. Powered by an all aluminum 5.3 V-8 engine that superseded Aston Martin’s famed inline-6, the V-8 Volante was endowed with a level of performance that set it apart from every other grand touring automobile in the world. Its luxury, too, was unparalleled, pampering occupants with deep-pile Wilton wool carpets, hand-fitted Connolly leather upholstery, lacquered walnut trim and, in the case of the convertible Vantage, a vault-like multi-layered folding top of the finest quality.

Never mind that the Vantage’s less efficient aerodynamics resulted in slightly reduced top speeds; the pleasure of top-down motoring, Aston Martin style, more than made up for that negligible detail. As documented with a copy of the original purchaser paperwork, this 1989 Aston Martin Vantage Volante convertible was completed at Aston Martin’s Newport Pagnell factory on May 5, 1989. One of just 58 examples built to U.S. specifications, it was delivered new by Palm Beach Motor Cars to golfing legend, businessman and noted automotive enthusiast Greg Norman.

Still in highly original condition with just 8,000 miles, its factory Cannock Black paint and black Everflex convertible top remain in outstanding condition, and the Parchment leather interior with contrasting black piping and carpets show minimal use, reflecting the car’s low mileage. The detailed engine compartment is home to a hand-assembled 5.3 L DOHC V-8 incorporating Weber-Marelli fuel injection and mated to a U.S.-spec 3-speed automatic transmission.

Distinguished by its more prominent wheel arch flares, front air dam, body-side sills, upswept tail and period-fashion BBS alloy wheels, this well-documented, exquisitely preserved V-8 Vantage convertible is presented with the owner’s handbook, tool kit, leather top cover and extra keys. This is arguably the most exclusive automobile of its era; for the discriminating collector, there is nothing else to compare.
