Though officially unveiled at the 2007 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the new flagship Aston Martin DBS had already made a starring film appearance in late 2006 alongside Daniel Craig’s James Bond in “Casino Royale.” Unusually for a Bond car, it had little need for gadgets, but it made an impact with its sheer screen presence and prowess. Though based on the DB9, the DBS was unmistakably something else altogether. Lighter, faster, far more potent and, visually, far more arresting, the DBS could be considered more akin to a more civilized, road-going, super GT version of the Aston Martin DBR9 Le Mans-class winner.
The DBS’s use of carbon fiber for opening panels, wings and for interior trim contributed to a significant weight reduction, while power from a 6.0L V-12 was increased a whole 60 HP to 510 HP. That cut the 0-60 MPH time from 4.9 to 4.2 seconds and elevated top speed from 186 to 191 MPH. In a subsequent group test in influential British magazine evo, the DBS won the day against the Ferrari 599 HGTE and Bentley Continental Supersports. This 2011 example with an odometer reading of 4,018 miles features the Lightning Silver exterior livery, which was introduced as an addition to the Aston Martin color palette on the 2007 Pebble Beach launch car.
The interior, featuring a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, is finished in Obsidian Black leather and Alcantara seat inserts. When launched, the DBS only offered a 6-speed manual transmission but soon yielded to customer demand with an uprated version of the DB9’s 6-speed Touchtronic automatic paddle shift system, as seen here. Initial customers had to wait more than 12 months after the DBS’s screen debut for first deliveries. Today there is no need to wait, though with a production run of just 2,536 DBS coupes, opportunities do not come along every day, and even less so with a car displaying just 4,011 miles and a new set of tires fitted in 2025.
