Widely regarded as a design classic, the Alfa Romeo Spider (105/115 series) was produced by the Italian manufacturer from 1966 to 1993. With production spanning three decades and only incurring minor aesthetic and mechanical changes in that period, the car forever immortalised by Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate stands as a true credit to those first cars assembled by Pininfarina.
This car was manufactured on July 7th 1967 and sold new in America as a left hand drive model. It was first registered in the UK on October 14th 1970 and according to the registration document records a total of only three owners in the UK which we understand to be correct. Regrettably, the full history and documentation for this car was lost when the previous owner to our vendor suffered a flood in a storage unit where the documents were kept, destroying the contents. We understand that this gentleman purchased the Spider in October 1996.
Our vendor has learnt that during the previous ownership the engine and gearbox have been rebuilt and a "major nut/bolt restoration" was carried out, although there is no history to support these claims other than the physical evidence on the car, which is compelling. Even a casual inspection of the car reveals that it has clearly has much time and money lavished upon it in recent years, and its performance and reliability in its current ownership suggest that this car really is as good as it looks.
Amongst what little is present is an invoice from the respected Alfa Romeo trimmer, Chris Adams, for fitting a new roof and carpets in December 2003. Since the installation of the interior trim is one of the last jobs to do when restoring a car, we can hazard that the thorough restoration was carried out in 2002 and/or 2003.
This really is a superb example of an early Spider Duetto that drives effortlessly, oozes style and would be a pleasure to own.
