Launched in 1963, the Sprint GT was clothed in beautifully balanced four-seater coachwork, penned by Carrozzeria Bertone's Giorgetto Giugiaro but now manufactured at Alfa's new Arese factory. It represented a successful attempt to produce a typically sporting Alfa Coupe for the young family man, a modestly priced four-seater combining the elegance of a Bertone-designed body with the performance of a twin-cam engine. Introduced in 1971, the 2000 GT Veloce (or GTV) was the final version of the classic 105-Series Alfa Romeo. There were no major styling changes made by Bertone, merely a new grille, the body remaining the same as the preceding 1600 and 1750 models.
Representing the final enlargement of Alfa's legendary twin-cam four, the 1,962cc engine produced 132bhp, which was delivered to the road via a five-speed gearbox and limited-slip differential. Torquier than its 1750 predecessor, the 2000 GT Veloce was good for a top speed of 120mph. These lovely Italian coupes were purpose-built for spirited, high-revving driving and offer great performance and beautiful Bertone design in an approachable package.
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
This sporty and potent Alfa Romeo 2000 GT Veloce was sold new in Santa Barbara, California and would remain there until acquired by its previous owner in 2006. The restoration started at this time was done with the vision to restore and upgrade the Alfa Romeo with tasteful and appropriate performance upgrades, to enjoy more power and better handling high-speed road use, but without compromising the original style and comfort of the car. The result is a wonderful, fast Alfa sports car that can be used as a daily driver as well as on vintage rallies and road tours.
The restoration was thoroughly and professionally carried out, and included paint, interior, engine, gearbox, differential as well as braking and suspension systems. The body was refinished in Alfa 'Quarry Beige' - a period Giulia 1750 GT color – while the interior was upgraded to include GTS Classic seats, a Momo Prototipo wheel, and Stack tachometer and auxiliary gauges.
The potent engine fitted a later 2.0-liter Alfa 75 twin-spark unit, prepared by AutoComponenti of Brookville, Ohio, and features a modified block drilled for increased lubrication, a high-volume oil pump, 10.0:1 compression ratio, ported and polished cylinder head and oil cooler. Induction is from twin Weber DCOE45 carburetors, while electronic ignition system, an aluminum radiator, uprated Denso alternator and a stainless-steel exhaust system was fitted.
The 5-speed gearbox has been rebuilt, running a lightweight clutch and flywheel, and the differential had been updated with an Alfaholics "Gripper" limited-slip differential. An Alfaholics fuel cell is fitted along with as facet electric fuel pump. Braking is provided by an upgraded Alfaholics system which consists of aluminum four-piston calipers with vented rotors in front and sport rotors at the rear. The suspension is upgraded with a Alfaholics "Fast Road" kit, which includes Eibach sport springs, Koni shocks, urethane bushings, adjustable upper arms, lightweight trailing arms, a S4 front sway bar. Finally, this GTV has been fitted with 15″ GTA-style alloy wheels wrapped on Michelin Pilot tires.
These early Alfa GTV's are superbly balanced cars, with slick gearboxes and nimble/predictable handling and is a wonderful vintage sports car in its standard form. This particular GTV has been taken to the next level with regard to power output and handling. It is complete with restoration records and photos, and service records.
