Tesla has reopened reservations for the second-generation Roadster, but securing a spot now requires a serious financial commitment. In the U.S., the new reservation costs $50,000: $5,000 is charged to a credit card upfront, while the remaining $45,000 must be wired within 10 days.
The reservation payment remains refundable until a purchase agreement is signed. However, Tesla says the final vehicle price has not yet been determined and does not guarantee when deliveries will begin. That makes the commitment particularly interesting for a car first unveiled back in 2017, with production originally targeted for around 2020 before being delayed multiple times.
Tesla continues to advertise ambitious targets, including 0–60 mph in 1.9 seconds, a top speed above 250 mph, and 620 miles of range. But with the Roadster still in development, should these figures really be considered final? How much confidence does $50,000 require? And after years of delays, will October 1 finally bring the answers buyers have been waiting for?
Until then, one thing is certain: the reservation gets you a place in line.
