9 Years Later, Roadster Returns

The Tesla Roadster has spent almost nine years becoming one of the most delayed—and most talked-about—cars in modern automotive history. Tesla unveiled the second-generation concept in 2017 and originally planned to begin production in 2020. Now, in 2026, the company says October 1 will finally reveal what all those years of development have produced.

The original concept promised astonishing numbers: 0–60 mph (97 km/h) in just 1.9 seconds and a top speed exceeding 250 mph (402 km/h). Elon Musk later pushed expectations even higher, suggesting the Roadster could accelerate from zero to 60 mph in under a second with an optional SpaceX package featuring thrusters.

Tesla’s latest teaser adds another clue, ending with the words “Go for launch.”

But after years of shifting deadlines and increasingly ambitious claims, the numbers may not even be the biggest story anymore. The real question is whether Tesla can finally turn the Roadster from a long-running promise into a production car.

Will October 1 actually be the day? Can the Roadster live up to nearly a decade of hype? And if it does, will it redefine the electric performance-car segment?
