Porsche hasn’t had a true halo car positioned above the 911 for more than a decade, but that could change with the rumored Porsche S1. Reportedly developed as a standalone supercar, the project could cost around €500,000 / $574,000 and revive a flat-eight engine Porsche has never used in a production road car.
Porsche has not confirmed the S1, although the company has acknowledged that another hypercar is being considered as it moves into more exclusive, higher-margin segments.
The idea has some history. Engineers reportedly built a Cayman-based prototype with a twin-turbo 5.0-liter / 305-cu-in flat-eight producing around 750 hp / 760 PS and 738 lb-ft / 1,000 Nm. It revved to 9,000 rpm, used a manual gearbox and underwent more than a year of testing before the project was shelved.
Porsche also has genuine racing history with flat-eight engines, making the rumored S1 especially intriguing.
Could Porsche finally put a flat-eight into a road car? And would you rather see the S1 use this engine or revive the Carrera GT’s V10 formula?
