Mercedes Makes Maybach Even Flashier

Mercedes-Maybach has revealed the 2027 GLS680, taking its flagship luxury SUV to an even more extravagant level. Designed for buyers who want maximum presence, the latest model introduces a bold new look with an illuminated chrome grille, rose-gold accents inside the headlights, and available 23-inch forged wheels featuring self-leveling center caps that keep the Maybach logo perfectly upright while driving.

Power comes from a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8, producing 603 hp (611 PS) and 850 Nm (627 lb-ft) of torque. While performance remains impressive, the GLS680 is clearly focused on rear-seat luxury rather than spirited driving.

To maximize passenger comfort, Mercedes-Maybach has removed the third row entirely, increasing rear legroom to 110.2 cm (43.4 inches). Rear occupants also benefit from premium features such as reclining executive seats and calf-massage functions, creating an experience closer to a private lounge than a traditional SUV.

Luxury, however, comes with compromises. Buyers who select the optional champagne refrigerator lose a significant portion of the cargo area, reducing everyday practicality despite the SUV's generous exterior dimensions. With a starting price of around $185,000 (€170,000), the GLS680 prioritizes exclusivity and comfort over luggage capacity.

The refreshed design, premium materials, and advanced technology are aimed directly at rivals from Rolls-Royce and Bentley, while the powerful V8 continues to deliver the effortless performance expected from a flagship luxury SUV.

Does the updated GLS680 have enough presence to compete with Rolls-Royce and Bentley? Are illuminated exterior details and rose-gold accents a tasteful luxury touch or simply too much? And should ultra-luxury SUVs continue using powerful V8 engines, or is it time for a fully electric future?
