Honda Recalls Over 325,000 Odyssey Minivans

Honda has announced a major recall affecting more than 325,000 Odyssey minivans after discovering a defect that can cause the rearview camera to stop working. The issue impacts certain 2018–2020 model-year vehicles and has prompted action from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

According to the recall documents, water can enter the rearview camera assembly through small cracks, eventually corroding the internal circuit board. If this happens, the backup camera may fail to display an image when the vehicle is shifted into reverse, reducing rear visibility and increasing the risk of an accident.

A total of 325,588 vehicles are included in the recall. Honda dealers will replace the faulty rearview camera free of charge, ensuring the affected vehicles once again comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 111 for rear visibility.

Owner notification letters are scheduled to begin on August 24, 2026. This campaign expands an earlier recall covering 212,068 Odyssey minivans from the 2019 and 2020 model years, adding another 113,520 vehicles built for the 2018 model year after engineers identified the same defect.

Investigators found that the original camera housing design allowed the mounting screw to become misaligned during assembly. The resulting stress could create tiny cracks in the housing, which would gradually widen due to weather and temperature changes. Once moisture entered the camera, corrosion could damage the electronics and eventually cause the system to fail.

To permanently resolve the problem, Honda will replace the original Magna-built camera with an updated Sony unit featuring an improved design that prevents improper mounting and water intrusion. Do you think backup cameras should undergo stricter durability testing before vehicles reach customers?
