Unveiled in 2001 with a stunning nighttime presentation at the base of Mount Etna before a select group of 200 invited guests, the new Murciélago wowed all onlookers. Totally modern and shockingly angular in design, the new Lamborghini’s heritage was unquestionable. Its specifications and performance credentials matched the new car’s looks, including the Murciélago’s midmounted 6.2L/570 HP V-12 engine, which boasted heritage back to the original Lamborghini V-12 design of the early 1960s. An advanced all-wheel drivetrain maximized power delivery. Translated from Castilian Spanish as “Bat,” the Murciélago followed Lamborghini’s tradition for naming many of its models after legendary Spanish fighting bulls, in this case a leading sire who managed to survive an epic 1879 fight in Córdoba. Production of the first series Murciélago, including the example from 2004 offered here, spanned 2001-06. Styling was updated and numerous detail-oriented running improvements silenced the doubters and conclusively proved that Lamborghini was still more than capable of improving on its pioneering supercar design and engineering prowess—all while maintaining the glorious madness and sex appeal that are integral to Lamborghini’s image. Yet, for all its performance, the Murciélago marks a quantum leap forward in drivability, thanks to Audi’s influence. A first-generation example, this steely Metallic Gray 2004 Lamborghini Murciélago features the F1-style paddle-shift automatic transmission. The black bucket-seat interior features eye-catching red contrast stitching, and desirable passenger amenities include power windows and locks, a factory AM/FM/CD audio system and logoed floor mats. A new battery has been installed as well. Equipped with the Lamborghini E-gear paddle-controlled transmission, the 6.2L V-12 engine produces 571 HP and will propel the car from a standstill to 60 MPH in an effortless 3.8 seconds and attain a top speed of about 205 MPH. Presented in Pearl Orange with Snow Corn leather interior, the factory emission sticker is still on the window, indicating the absolute original condition in which this car is offered. Taking the lead from the Diablo, the Murcielago was introduced in 2001 and exited the scene in 2010, the first vehicle produced under Audi management. Regarded as one of the most successful supercars built by Lamborghini, just more than 4,000 were produced. The Murcielago name is derived from a fighting bull, one who was so bold, spirited and ferocious that it survived 24 sword strokes from Matador Rafael Molina Sanchez in 1879. The matador was so taken by Murcielago’s courage and stamina, he spared the bull’s life. Interestingly, Murcielago sought to lessen the dramatics surrounding the raging bull company by increasing quality, offering a higher degree of technology and engineering, and overall, producing a better car. It worked well, customers and the media alike remarked positively on the fit and finish of the interior and the body, the extensive use of carbon-fiber components and the overall feel of the interior.
