The special limited edition “CORNES” badge overlooking the rear deck signifies the purpose of this limited edition, which was to commemorate the then 15-year relationship between Ferrari and Cornes & Co., Japan’s leading Ferrari importer. Launched in 1992, the 512TR took up the mantle of the enormously successful Testarossa introduced in 1984, building on that model’s success with more traditional Pininfarina styling touches that included new front and rear bumpers, more prominent driving lights and a new front grille that brought the 512TR’s visage more into line with the contemporary 348 series. New thin-spoke alloy wheels showcased the 512TR’s enormous vented disc brakes and painted Ferrari calipers. The cockpit was redesigned to improve driver ergonomics, all the while retaining a distinct Ferrari feel in such elements as the tightly grouped instrument cluster and 5-speed gated shifter. The Testarossa’s 4.9L flat-12 engine output was increased from 380 HP to 428 HP at 6,750 RPM with sophisticated low-friction Nickasil-coated cylinder liners and vastly improved breathing. In addition to the special limited edition “CORNES” badging, the 15 Cornes Limited Edition 512TR Speciales were treated to exclusive Rosso Rubino Metalizzato paint, tan Connolly leather interior upholstery, unique three-piece alloy wheels and Cloisonné Scuderia Ferrari shields embedded in the front fenders. Sporting a 390 HP flat-12 engine and gorgeously flowing Pininfarina styling, the new Testarossa debuted as the fastest Ferrari road car ever produced to date. Speaking of styling, while the “cheese grater” side strakes have been dismissed as a trendy styling cue, they efficiently channeled cooling airflow into the radiators at the Testarossa’s rear flanks. Importantly, the Testarossa forced Lamborghini to up its game considerably, resulting in uprated versions of the Countach, eventually spurring Ferrari to release the updated 512TR at Geneva in 1992. Produced only through 1994, it was capable of reaching 195 MPH with a comprehensively upgraded engine developing 421 BHP, plus carefully updated styling. As before, this final Testarossa variant delivered a surprisingly user-friendly driving experience to match its shattering performance. According to renowned Ferrari historian Marcel Massini, 2,261 of these refined performers were built in all. Understood to be one of only 408 examples originally sold in the U.S., this black on black leather example from 1993 shows just 27,000 miles. In addition to the uprated 4.9L horizontally opposed flat 12-cylinder engine, the TR’s many race-derived technical features include a dog-leg 5-speed manual transaxle with Ferrari’s classical gated shift quadrant, plus cross-drilled and vented disc brakes with cooling ducts up front. The TR’s renowned drivability and friendly operating characteristics and visibility are enhanced with air conditioning, power window lifts, comprehensive instrumentation and embossed Ferrari “Cavallino Rampante” motifs to each seatback. A true object of automotive desire when new, the 512TR now enjoys wide enthusiast acclaim for its fabulous driving dynamics and, of course, its still-shattering performance credentials. Named after the all-conquering V-12-powered sports racers of the late 1950s and early ‘60s, the new Testarossa was the first production 12-cylinder Ferrari offered in North America since the landmark 1968-1973 365 GTB/4 Daytona. Initial reaction to its innovative Pininfarina styling was mixed but soon gave way to widespread acceptance on the strength of performance that surpassed that of every roadgoing Ferrari before it, thanks to its 4.9L flat-12 architecture, new 4-valve heads, refined fuel injection and valve timing. In 1992, Ferrari substantially improved on the formula with the new 512TR. Refinements included lowering the flat-12 engine, 5-speed transmission and integrated limited-slip differential in the chassis, which itself was lowered to improve roadholding and steering response, assets enhanced by refined suspension tuning, new 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels and 4-wheel cross-drilled and ventilated disc brakes with 4-piston calipers. The rear deck was redesigned for cleaner air flow and improved heat extraction to maximize the performance of the 512TR’s more powerful 4.9L/422 HP engine. Interior ergonomics were also considerably improved, with all these refinements coming together in the ultimate supercar of its era and a spectacular grand tourer to boot.
