    Buick Limited Convertible, 1958

Chassis No.: 8E4008034 Auction: Monterey 2021 Auction date: August 14, 2021 Lot No.: S84 $170,500 | Sold • Exterior: Silver Mist • Interior: Gray • Body: Convertible • 1 of 839 Limited Convertibles produced in 1958 • Nailhead 364/300 HP V-8 engine • Hydraulic lifters • 4-barrel downdraft carburetor • Automatic transmission • Power steering • Power brakes • Silver Mist with Black convertible top • Blue leather upholstery • Air conditioning • Power windows • Padded dash • Fashion-Aire Dynastar grille • Stylized V hood emblem • Clock and radio • Automatic headlight dimmer • Full size wheel covers • Wide Whitewall tires For 1958, Buick resurrected the Limited trim name for its top-of-the-line offering. While the 1958 Buick was well known for an abundance of chrome and brightwork, styling of the Limited was slightly more subdued. Instead of the large Sweepspear side trim used by other Buicks, the Limited employed a color-keyed decorative insert and hash marks along the rear fenders. The Limited also received unique tail lights compared to other Buicks, using wraparound lenses decorated with slim chrome bands, and a specific rear bumper with bullet-shaped guards housing Dual Jet reverse lights. Like so many upscale luxury cars, the details were delicate but served well to distinguish the Limited from lesser models. Fitted with an ocean of standard features, the Limited was an absolute luxury car, and pricing reflected it. The four-door hardtop held a base price of $5,112 (roughly $46,000 in 2021). Largely due to the lofty price, Buick only sold 7,438 Limiteds in 1958; of those, only 839 were convertibles like this one. Finished in bright Silver Mist with a black convertible top, this Limited convertible rolls on wide whitewall tires with full-width wheel covers. Up front, the famous 160-square Fashion-Aire Dynastar grille sparkles among the rest of the trim like the stylized “V” hood emblem and fender toppers, bumpers, side trim and so much more. Powered by a 364/300 HP Nailhead V-8 engine with hydraulic lifters and a 4-barrel downdraft carburetor, this Limited is further equipped with an automatic transmission, power steering and power brakes make cruising and parking an easy affair. Inside, passengers are coddled by luxuriously tufted seats upholstered with gray leather, a matching padded dashboard, factory air conditioning, power windows, an AM radio, in-dash clock and much more. Well optioned, this Limited also has the automatic headlight dimmer, known as the Autronic Eye in GM parlance, a unique system that dimmed the high beams when it detected oncoming headlights, turning them back on when the other vehicle had passed. https://www.mecum.com/lots/465272/1958-buick-limited-convertible/

    Buick Limited Sport Phaeton, 1940

Chassis No.: 83929610 Auction: Monterey 2019 Auction date: August 17, 2019 Lot No.: F107 $115,000 | High bid • Exterior: Green • Interior: Green • Body: Sport Phaeton • 1 of only 7 Limited Sport Phaetons produced in 1940 • Sold new for $1,952 in 1940 • Comprehensive restoration • 320 CI Dynaflash inline 8-cylinder engine • 2-barrel aero downdraft carburetor • Rated at 141 HP and 269 ft/lbs of torque • 3-speed manual transmission • Semifloating rear axle • Independent front suspension with coil springs • Rear coil spring suspension • Hydraulic drum brakes • Finished in Verde Green with Green interior • Tan canvas convertible top • Sonomatic pushbutton radio • Fresh Air under-seat heater/defroster • Lighter and ash tray • Fold-down arm rests • Dual amber fog lamps • Dual side mount spares in hard covers • Painted steel wheels • Wide Whitewall tires By 1940, it was near the end of an era for four-door convertibles, but designers at General Motors wanted that era to go out with a bang. This 1940 Buick Limited Sport Phaeton was priced at $1,952 when new and is one of only seven built. A dramatic example of what peak pre-World War II styling had become, the 1940 models were modernized considerably compared to 1939 and featured a wider grille with the headlights incorporated into the front fenders. The running boards of 1939 were eliminated, giving the new Buick a more cohesive appearance. This restored Limited offered by the Academy of Art University Collection rides on a 133-inch wheelbase chassis previously used for the Roadmaster and rolls on 7.50-16 wide whitewall tires on painted steel wheels with chrome wheel covers and bright trim rings. Coil springs, front and rear, with independent front suspension give it a smooth ride, and hydraulic drum brakes bring it to a stop. The power is provided by the iconic 320 CI OHV Dynaflash straight-8 engine with a single dual-downdraft carburetor that produces 141 HP at 3,600 RPM and 269 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 RPM. Power is sent to the semi-floating rear axle by a column-shifted 3-speed manual transmission. The Buick’s body is finished in the correct 1940 Verde Green color and is beautifully contrasted with a tan, canvas-type convertible top. Dual fender-mounted spare tires in hard steel covers dress up the styling while dual amber fog lamps help light the way in the front. The interior artfully matches the exterior with smooth, green leather throughout, trimmed with fold-down armrests and coordinated green wool carpet front and rear. Options and accessories include a $63 Sonomatic pushbutton radio, ash tray, lighter and Fresh Aire under-seat heater and defroster. This CCCA Full Classic 1940 Limited Sport Phaeton has undergone a comprehensive restoration and would be a star at any Buick Club, AACA or CCCA show. https://www.mecum.com/lots/380884/1940-buick-limited-sport-phaeton/
