The W210 E55 AMG is perhaps one of the most understated of Mercedes' performance cars, originally debuting in 1999. Representing one of the first true AMG/M-B 'partnership' models with Mercedes purchasing a controlling interest in AMG the same year as this car was built. Powered by the M113, 5.4-litre, naturally-aspitated V8 generating 349bhp, 391lb/ft and offering 0-60mph in 5.7 seconds. True restrained German muscle with only Monoblock wheels, an AMG badge and a different exhaust tip distinguishing it from a standard E-Class. This effectively one owner car has been much loved by the same couple since new and has been thoroughly enjoyed over a remarkable 220,000 miles.     Mercedes-Benz E50 AMG Avantgarde, 1996

    €41,720 | Sold • French title • Less than 39,000 km from new! • Only 2,960 examples • Documented history • No reserve “I’ve never driven such a gem before”, said Formula 1 driver Niki Lauda about the new E50 AMG. Indeed, this worthy successor to the 500 E which passed through the hands of the AMG tuning specialist before being acquired by Mercedes, became a subtle blend of luxury and sportiness. Its particular aerodynamics, luxurious finish and V8 producing 347 hp made this car very unique on the market, of which only 2,960 examples were produced. This particular example is exceptional, since it only had a mileage of 38,931 km at the time of our inspection! Its manufacturer’s sheet indicates that it was ordered new by the Mercedes dealership in Wuppertal (Germany) in a sober “Adamantin Silver Metallic” colour, paired with a two-tone leather interior combining alpaga grey and slate grey. This beautiful E50 was then exported to Japan and it was in 2012 that a collector from Munich brought it back to Germany, as he was receptive to its European specifications. The car totaled 12,000 km at that time and since then, a file of invoices documented the regular increase in mileage. Its current owner located this example in 2019 after an extensive search and when its mileage was just over 25,000 km; since then, he’s used it and serviced it regularly. A true milestone in the history between Mercedes and AMG, this rare E50 is equipped with numerous features, including a glass sunroof as well as heated front and rear seats; it is also one of the lowest mileage examples on the market. AMG offered a fully reworked W210 with a 5-liter engine known as the E50 (and later the E55 in the USA), but many of the tuning parts could be fitted to 'cooking' versions as well. THE CAR OFFERED The car offered here from the Barry Taylor Estate is a rare, European market E420 Wagon, equipped from new with the 4.2-liter version of the venerable M119 DOHC V8 engine. Aside from its rarity as a V8 powered estate, this car was highly optioned with a number of special-order features from the AMG catalogue. Build records show it was ordered via the Coblenz Branch in Germany, with additional text indicating it was delivered to AMG with Code 772 (AMG Styling Package) and fitted with a host of options. The option sheet spans two pages to include such niceties as a Designo interior, Xenon lamps with washers, AMG sport suspension, decorative stitching, additional, leather covered options, Alcantara headlining and sun visors, and much more. It is believed that Barry Taylor used this unique E420 as his 'shop car' after retiring his W123 E500 estate. It is presented in fair condition overall and would serve as an excellent basis for a light refurbishment. Please note that this car has been in long-term storage, has not been started while in Bonhams' care, and will require recommissioning.
