A category in the 1990s, World Rally Championship regulations require the homologation of a certain number of road-going vehicles. No less than 2,200 units of the 323 GT-R were sold worldwide, of which only 200 were reserved for France. Mazda thought at the time that it would be good for the brand’s image to develop a sporty model and enter it in rallies. The placid 323 wagon was finally chosen by Warmbold, who obtained Mazda’s agreement, to start the development of its rally-prepared version in Gr. A. The engine is a 1.8-liter 16-valve turbo with a power of 210 hp for the Japanese market, while it drops to 185 hp for European customers due to the catalytic converter. The overall weight of the 323 GT-R, contained at just over 1.2 t despite its all-wheel drive, allows it to have an interesting power-to-weight ratio. The 323 presented here is a very rare French version, first put on the road on August 24, 1993. Red in color with a grey and black cloth interior, it has all the specificities of the cars intended for our market: manual windows, and no air conditioning or sunroof. It starts its life in the Drôme and remains in the hands of the same owner until 2002. It then changes department to travel to the small roads in the French Jura until 2018, carrying carries the registration 3073 RN 39. The current owner bought it in November 2019. This Mazda will always be maintained with great care as evidenced by the many invoices attached to the file. We can note in March 2011 at 98,186 km, the change of shocks and cups. In 2018 a major overhaul is performed with the replacement of the rear stabilizer bar, silent-blocks and the fitting of Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tires. In June 2021 at 13,4865 km, the brakes are changed to EBC with the installation of aviation type brake hoses, and new suspension tie rods, all Mazda parts. Just before the sale, the distribution and exhaust system were replaced as well. An underbody treatment was done and no corrosion is to be reported.
